Last week, we dedicated a webinar to the automotive industry in France.

The page below ⤵️shows the net balance of jobs created and eliminated recorded by Trendeo, broken down by company category.

French carmakers, even though their situation has improved in the recent period, account for the largest share of total job cuts since 2009. The decline of the carmakers has dragged down that of parts suppliers and other suppliers.

The positive balance for foreign automakers (primarily Toyota) seems to indicate that it is possible to successfully manufacture small vehicles in France.

The amounts invested reflect the sector’s response in France: these are primarily battery manufacturing projects, intended to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles.

Services and retail are creating net jobs (+14,230), preserving a small share of the jobs lost.

The automotive industry in France has therefore responded to the severe 2009 crisis (see how the sector’s net balance has evolved in the presentation).

The other elements of the analysis highlight in particular the scale of Chinese investment in Europe, which is adding to local competition and partly explains the recent difficulties.
